Religion, Spirituality, and Health Scientific Interest Group, Classroom #2
The Role of Religion, Spirituality, and Secularism in Whole Person Health
This NIH Religion, Spirituality, and Health Scientific Interest Group (RSH-SIG) workshop will feature a presentation by founder Ms. Joan Romaine (NIAAA), highlighting the group’s activities and contributions. Senior Investigator Dr. Chandra Jackson (NIEHS) will describe the significance of research at the intersection of religion, spirituality, and secularism in relation to whole person health—an area relevant to all NIH Institutes and Centers. Dr. Jackson will also introduce emerging approaches, such as integrating these topics into person-centered care and Exposomic research, which examines how environmental, social, behavioral, and biological exposures across the life course influence mental and physical health. Her recent call to action in sleep research will be highlighted as an illustrative example. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with presenters and RSH-SIG members during a concluding Q&A session.

Reverse Phenotyping Core, Classroom #5
Reverse Phenotyping Core: Build Your Genotype-first Clinical Research Cohort with RPC
The Reverse Phenotyping Core has nearly 16,000 genomic sequencing research participants available for NIH investigators to recall for clinical testing based on harboring genomic variants of interest. In this workshop, you will explore the RPC Data Browser and select variants in your gene of interest to design your own recall-by-genotype study. By the end of the workshop you will be ready to submit an application to the RPC to recontact these participants for recruitment to your clinical or translational research study. This workshop will advance your research by testing your gene-disease association using this genomic ascertainment method. We will also be available to answer questions about our dataset and brainstorm or refine your genomic ascertainment project.

Federal Malaria Research Network (Malaria Interest Group) Meeting
The Federal Malaria Research Network (FMRN) / Malaria Interest Group (MIG) is an interagency working group composed of scientists and professionals in the United States Government (USG) working toward global prevention and control of malaria. FMRN convenes regularly to share ideas, expertise, and findings pertinent to use-inspired malaria research, from laboratory to field investigations and implementation and impact evaluation. FMRN strives to enhance cross-governmental strategic collaborations and activities to advance global malaria control and elimination efforts.
FMRN members present and discuss research and policy matters relevant to use-inspired research. Areas of discussion focus on novel detection technologies and strategies, vaccines, and other preventive and therapeutic interventions, including malaria parasite vector control, as well as novel approaches to clinical trial design and monitoring of programmatic impact on malaria morbidity and mortality.

The Rare Disease Informatics Scientific Interest Group (RDI-SIG) workshop will bring together researchers, clinicians, informaticians, and data scientists to explore how AI, biomedical data, and cross-NIH collaboration can advance rare disease research.
Psychedelic Science and Medicine Interest Group, Classroom #7
Psychedelic Science and Medicine: Highlighting Intramural Research
The NIH Psychedelic Science and Medicine Interest Group (PSIG) started in 2023 to create a space within the NIH for scientists, students, and all those interested to discuss basic, clinical, and translational research related to psychedelics. The PSIG hosts monthly virtual meetings on teams including journal clubs and guest talks. This workshop will begin with an introduction to the PSIG and its activities, followed by 2-3 talks from intramural scientists conducting research in the field of psychedelic science. The first-talk will be from Dr. Grant Glatfelter (NIH/NIDA), a post-doctoral fellow in the Designer Drug Unit at NIH/NIDA, who studies the neuropharmacology of emerging new psychoactive substances (NPS) and novel medications of the opioid, cannabinoid, stimulant, and hallucinogen classes under expert mentorship of Dr. Michael H. Baumann. Dr. Glatfelter’s talk will be titled “Utility of the Mouse Head Twitch Response in Psychedelic Drug Discovery: Strengths, Limitations, and Methodological Advances in Detection”. The second talk will be from Michelle Olofsson (NIH/NIMH), a PhD student in the Graduate Partnerships Program (GPP) between the NIH and Karolinska Institute. The title of this talk will be “Psychedelic Epidemiology: Prevalence Rates and Risk Factors for Long-Term Difficulties”. The session will end with a Q&A.

Translation to Patient Impact: Connecting Discovery, Translation, and Clinical Impact
Scientific discovery improves human health only when it is successfully translated into safe, effective, and accessible patient care. Hosted by the Translational and Clinical Research Scientific Interest Group (TCR-SIG), this workshop provides an overview of the translational pathway, illustrating how basic research, translational science, clinical research, regulatory science, and clinical implementation work together to transform discoveries into real-world health solutions. Participants will explore the complementary roles of the NIH, NIH Clinical Center, FDA, academia, industry, and patient communities, and discover how interdisciplinary collaboration accelerates the development and implementation of innovative diagnostics, therapeutics, and precision medicine to improve patient and population health.

TGF-beta Signaling in Development, Homeostasis, and Disease
TGF-beta was discovered on the NIH campus almost fifty years ago. Since then, there have been many advances into its role in regulating myriad cellular processes intrinsic to development and disease. This workshop will introduce ongoing intramural research into TGF-beta super family signaling with the aim of expanding the repertoire of the collaborative interactions amongst cross-cutting research programs.

Affective perception: Neural mechanisms and physiological correlates of pain and mood
Affective perception encompasses emotion and bodily sensations. This workshop brings together three leading experts in affective perception – Drs. Lauren Atlas, Daniel Pine, and Jennifer Evans – to present research from both healthy and clinical populations. Their talks will highlight the neural mechanisms and physiological correlates underlying pain, anxiety, and depression. Together, these insights advance our understanding of the neural basis of affective perception in the healthy brain and inform treatment for disorders in which affective perception is altered, such as chronic pain and mood disorders.

Prepublication screening for image manipulation, plagiarism, and AI-generated text: Hands-on introduction to using iThenticate and ImageTwin
Journals increasingly use automated and AI-assisted tools to screen manuscripts during editorial reviews. This workshop introduces NIH intramural researchers to beta-testing versions of similar tools. Participants will learn how to use iThenticate for text-similarity review and ImageTwin for scientific image-integrity screening, with emphasis on early detection, responsible interpretation, and corrective action before the publication process is delayed.

The Biosafety Officers at NIH will deliver information and tips on how to appropriately register work with potentially hazardous biological materials and/or recombinant nucleic acids for your laboratories. Content will cover the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules and other registration-related policies. Developing Interventions for Efficacy and Sustainability to Address Health Disparities
Developing and testing interventions is a key step to reduce health disparities and improve overall population health. However, evidence-based interventions can be difficult to translate from a controlled experiment to real-world settings, limiting the impact of these interventions. The objectives of this workshop are to provide an overview of the principles in developing translation-ready interventions to enhance both effectiveness and sustainability, and to showcase examples of sustainable dissemination and implementation research to address health disparities and improve overall population health.
