Choosing the Right Viral Vector Platform: A Practical Guide to Gene Delivery and Viral Applications

Introduction to Viral Vector Platforms

Viral vectors have become indispensable tools for modern biomedical research, enabling efficient gene delivery for cell engineering, functional genomics, disease modeling, gene therapy studies, and in vivo investigations. However, selecting the appropriate viral platform can be challenging, as each vector system possesses unique advantages, limitations, tropisms, payload capacities, and biosafety considerations.

This workshop is designed to introduce investigators to the major viral vector platforms available across the NIH Viral Vector Cores, discuss the strengths and limitations of each system, and provide practical guidance on selecting the most appropriate vector for specific research applications.

Topics will include:
• Overview of gene delivery technologies
• Selecting the optimal vector for specific experimental applications
• Biosafety considerations and regulatory requirements
• Resources and services available through the NIH Viral Vector Cores

The workshop is intended for investigators, staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, postbaccalaureate fellows, and trainees interested in incorporating viral vector technologies into their research programs.
