Join us in Lipsett Amphitheater for these four specials lectures that will complement concurrent workshops in the NIH Library and in the FAES classrooms. If you are unable to attend, please watch via the videocast listed below each lecture. https://videocast.nih.gov/
Victoria A. Harden Lecture in NIH History with John Burklow
The Office of NIH History and Museum seminar series highlights historical topics of interest to the NIH community. Events range from traditional lectures to conversations between those telling, and those making, history—with additional formats to be explored. The Harden Lecture is delivered annually by a scholar of note who speaks on a topic that spotlights NIH’s rich history. Our speaker this year, John Burklow, spent more than 30 years at the NIH in numerous communications leadership roles. The title of his talk is:
“John, We Have an Emergency…”
Pivotal Moments That Helped Shape NIH
Anita Roberts Lecture with Kelly Ten Hagen, Ph.D.
The Anita B. Roberts Lecture Series, “Distinguished Women Scientists” at NIH, highlights outstanding research achievements of women scientists at the NIH. The seminar is dedicated to Dr. Anita Roberts and honors her role as an exceptional mentor and scientist. Dr. Kelly Ten Hagen is a Senior Investigator in the Developmental Glycobiology Section of the NIH National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Her lecture title is "Mucins and O-glycosylation in Health and Disease."
FAES Lecture and 'Meet & Greet' with Elias Zerhouni, M.D.
Dr. Elias Zerhouni, a global leader in biomedical research and policy, will deliver a talk titled "Disease Knows No Politics," offering an inside look at his pivotal tenure as the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2008. Drawing from his new memoir, Dr. Zerhouni will share key milestones, crucial lessons, and the significant challenges he faced while leading the world's largest biomedical research agency. He will recount the story behind the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research and the landmark passage of the NIH Reform Act of 2006, which helped establish the potent Common Fund to support high-impact, cross-cutting research. He also will discuss his efforts to prioritize health gaps and his role in introducing a public access policy for NIH-funded research.
The lecture will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Lipsett Amphitheater. This will be followed by a 'meet and greet' on the FAES Terrace with refreshments from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
G. Burroughs Mider Lecture with Gisela Storz, Ph.D.
Established in 1968 in honor of the first NIH director of laboratories and clinics, the G. Burroughs Mider Lecture is presented by an NIH intramural scientist to recognize and appreciate outstanding contributions to biomedical research. Dr. Gisela Storz, an NIH Distinguished Investigator in the Section on Environmental Gene Regulation in the NIH National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), will deliver a lecture titled "A New Universe of Regulatory Microproteins."
