The NIH Library Bioinformatics Support Program (http://nihlibrary.nih.gov/Bioinformatics) was founded in 2009, based on a survey of NIH Researchers. It offers three types of services: training, providing access to commercial resources, and consultation. Training is given in the classroom and via one-on-one tutorials, both covering a wide range of topics such as sequence analysis, high-throughput data analysis including microarray and next generation sequencing data, genome browsers, clinical genomics and pathway analysis. The classes are held in the NIH Library's state-of-the-art training room, where students are provided laptops for hands-on practice. The classes are in great demand and have been attended by over 8,000 participants to date. Access to the class schedule and several online tutorials can be found on our web site http://nihlibrary.nih.gov/bioinformatics . The one-on-one tutorials are held at the three high performance workstations (64-bit architecture, 48 GB RAM and 2TB disk space) that are available for NIH staff to use. These workstations are also available for use by NIH staff and can be reserved at http://nihlibrary.libcal.com/booking/bioinfo_workstations . Additional topics for the tutorials are Linux command line and scripting. The program also licenses bioinformatics software for NIH staff. The list of licensed resources is available at our web site under “Analysis Tools and Databases”. Consultations are offered on researcher’s projects, including topics such as gene function, pathway analysis and high throughput data analysis. The program has been recognized by an OD Honor Award (2013) and in the NIH Catalyst (http://nihlibrary.nih.gov/Services/Bioinformatics/Documents/catalyst_article.pdf, http://nihlibrary.nih.gov/Services/Bioinformatics/Documents/catalyst_v18i6p3.pdf ).
