Abstract

NIH 3D is a comprehensive 3D model repository dedicated to open data sharing across scientific and medical disciplines. Building on the success of its predecessor, NIH 3D Print Exchange, this platform provides an extensive resource for researchers, educators, clinicians, and various stakeholders who rely on high-quality 3D models.

NIH 3D supports the generation of models from scientific data and accepts user-created mesh files, allowing users with diverse skills and expertise to contribute and benefit. Leveraging advanced tools like ChimeraX, NIH 3D processes numerous molecular data files and fetches data directly from PDB, PubChem, and the AlphaFold database.

A key feature of NIH 3D is its commitment to open data sharing. All models in the repository are available for free download, promoting widespread access to valuable scientific resources. Contributors can license their work and assign persistent DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) to their submissions, enhancing the visibility and citation of their contributions.
