As part of an initiative to infuse equity in preclinical research, a Knowledge Guide was created to provide insight into preclinical drug development for a broad audience. This important stage between drug discovery and clinical trials is often poorly understood but essential to translating an early discovery into a potential medicine. The process is often referred to “as the valley of death” so this scenic illustration reimagines the drug development journey coupled with a step-by-step narrative that outlines how scientists develop a drug that will be safe to test in humans. It also incorporates key concepts and highlights an ecosystem that grounds researchers and key partners on the importance of centering equity within the drug development stage and signals the need to do so throughout the span of preclinical biomedical research.
