The NIA’s Nonhuman Primate Core was established by the IRP to provide interdisciplinary translational research services to intramural and extramural investigators.
The NIA has been conducting studies with rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) for over 30 years; now, as a Core, this history and sample repository is available to others. We offer investigators the unique opportunity to test their hypotheses in vivo in a mammalian model that is genetically and physiologically similar to humans and shares similar disease phenotypes. Data and samples represent male and female animals ranging in age from 1-40 years, encompassing the entire lifespan. At 40 years this is the human equivalent of approximately 120 years. Over the past few decades, we have amassed an extensive repository of physiological data and samples for use as a robust research resource. Examples of data we routinely track include blood chemistries, complete blood counts, body weights, radiography, EKG, and diabetic biomarkers. Plasma, serum, and whole blood are collected and banked annually, and comprehensive tissue harvesting is conducted at necropsy. Flash frozen samples are available along with extensive medical histories for each study subject Over the past few decades, we have amassed an extensive repository of physiological data and samples for use as a robust research resource. This NHP Core resource is an opportunity to bring a translational model to your laboratory bench. We look forward to facilitating the achievement of your research goals.
