Drug repurposing is often utilized by clinicians for diseases, especially rare diseases, that lack approved treatments. CURE ID is a global, publicly available website and mobile application, developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS, at NIH ) that systematically collects clinical cases of drug repurposing. CURE ID utilizes a standard case report form for data from direct case submissions by patients, care partners, and healthcare providers, curation of published literature, and extraction from electronic health records. CURE ID collects real-world data of drug repurposing to generate hypotheses and potentially inform clinical trials.
Initially, CURE ID focused on cases with infectious diseases but has expanded to other therapeutic areas with high unmet medical needs, including pilot projects for Long COVID (post-infectious syndrome), Sarcoma (rare cancer) and the RASopathies (rare genetic disease). These pilot projects involved development of specific case report forms in collaboration with disease experts including patients and providers. CURE ID aims to be a resource for clinicians, patients, and patient organizations as well as a tool for the public to share their treatment experiences with repurposed drugs. Overall, CURE ID hopes to help identify potential treatments for diseases lacking sufficient approved therapies.
