Abstract

CDR is a distributed web-based system that manages multi-dimensional data models on biospecimens. CDR was developed and is currently utilized to integrate clinical data with biospecimen annotation on samples collected from cancer patients and post-mortem donors, for the Biospecimen Pre-analytical Variables (BPV) and Genotype-tissue Expression (GTEx) programs. BPV investigates the effects of pre-analytical factors on the molecular profiles of surgical tumor samples collected under pre-defined conditions. The GTEx program studies gene expression and regulation across multiple human tissues (25 ~ 30 different types) from ~ 900 healthy normal donors. CDR is built with a combination of technologies including Grails, Oracle, Groovy, jQuery, and Apache Solr. Compliant with HIPPA regulations, CDR protects private information and provides secure data access based on users’ roles and privileges. Its user-friendly GUIs streamline data entry following SOPs. The automated data checks and validations confirm data integrity and SOP adherence simultaneously. Web services APIs connect CDR to multiple remote systems for data access and sample inventory. The reporting and analytics module supports data analysis, report generation and real-time operational data snapshots. As an efficient case management tool, CDR could be adopted by the broader research community to standardize and streamline biobanking operations.
