Abstract

Public access to the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) service offered by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is available through the World Wide Web as well as other network protocols, but since these are shared public resources they have inherent limitations to ensure a fair and consistent level of service to the scientific community. In order to provide alternatives for BLAST users with computationally demanding tasks and/or proprietary data sets that are not practical for the aforementioned resources, the NCBI has developed an Amazon Machine Instance (AMI) hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that allows users to instantiate single-node BLAST servers on the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) system provided by AWS. This AMI allows users to run stand-alone searches with the BLAST+ applications, submit searches through a subset of the NCBI-BLAST URL API, and perform searches with a simplified webpage.
