Abstract

In biomedical research communities, there is much discussion about incentivizing and facilitating data sharing. However, far less discussion concerns obtaining and meaningfully using shared data. Repurposing existing data permits agile research leading to rapid discoveries that can more quickly be translated into practice. Three bottlenecks exist: (1) difficulty locating relevant data, (2) challenges negotiating access to the data, and (3) challenges using the data meaningfully. Here we address these challenges by conveying our recent experience in gathering and reusing data by incorporating a multidisciplinary team approach in which we bring together expertise in research data management, computer science, and the biomedical sciences. These collaborations demonstrate the benefits and pitfalls in repurposing biomedical data to answer novel research questions.
