Abstract

The NIH Center for Information Technology, in collaboration with NHGRI, has created a Case Management Portal for use by the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP). The NIH UDP brings together a wide range of medical specialties throughout NIH and the outside medical and scientific community in order to identify medical conditions that have eluded diagnosis. The UDP Portal coordinates the sharing of de-identified multimedia medical data with the UDP's worldwide consultants. The portal serves as a central repository for collecting and organizing documents and images related to cases, as well as a host for case discussion. The UDP Portal was designed to rely on open-source software. The Web site was built using the Drupal content management platform, Apache Web server, and the PostgreSQL database, all running on a Linux server. Access to the Web site is controlled using NIH Federated Login. A backup server mirrors the database and multimedia files. Modifications were made to the Drupal installation to (1) limit outside consultants’ data access on a case-by-case basis using Federated Login credentials, (2) link to an external pathology imaging Web service, and (3) allow DICOM image sets to open using a Web-launched version of NIH’s ImageJ viewing and analysis package.
