Abstract

The CMB–ARTiC unit (Assisted Reproduction Technologies including Cryopreservation) has been providing NIAID/DIR scientists with expert, reliable, and cost-effective services for three years. Commonly requested services include: rederivation [of imported animals or those an investigator needs free of a confounding organism], cryopreservation, and transgenic (Tg) or knockout (KO) production. The ARTiC unit also provides: assisted reproduction for rapid colony expansion; rescue of aged or dead animals through IVF (in-vitro fertilization) or ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection); colony genetics and breeding consultation; and assistance with study related reproduction experiments. Recent technical advancements in assisted reproduction allow us to produce large numbers of mouse embryos by in vitro fertilization, resulting in a further acceleration of the cryopreservation, rederivation, or expansion process. The latest service offered is the production of Tg or KO mice by microinjection on the strain of your choice. If you can provide a clean DNA vector or cloned ES cells, we will supply you with a minimum of three positive founders. The ARTiC will also help in efforts to create Tg models in laboratory animal species other than the mouse.
