Abstract

NCBI has been active in making genomic data accessible via cloud storage and in providing software to enable services via cloud computing. The 1,000 Genomes Project in collaboration with NHGRI, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and other international partners, is placing up to 150 terabytes of sequence data into cloud storage for access by researchers around the world. We discuss the benefits, challenges and lessons learned from this effort. In a second project, NCBI has provided an up-to-date instance of the BLAST sequence analysis program along with relevant databases for use by researchers. While seemingly a simple task, providing and packaging both the software and data has required significant engineering effort.
