Abstract

The Pathology/Histotechnology Laboratory (PHL) provides comprehensive research support for the FNLCR/NIH. The Veterinary Pathology Section is staffed by two, board-certified veterinary pathologists who offer integrated pathology services including consult/design of necropsy protocols, phenotyping of genetically engineered mice (GEM), immunopathology, anatomic pathology, toxicological pathology, and specimen classification/ selection for tissue microarrays or laser micro dissection (LC and LCM). The Histotechnology Laboratory (HL) offers complimentary support including rodent hematology and blood chemistry testing, complex necropsy support, fixed and frozen tissue processing, microtomy, histological staining, enzyme stains, 400+ validated immunohistochemistry assays, custom ISH assay support, and custom nucleic acid isolation options for frozen/fixed animal and human tissue blocks, cores, and precut slides including yield and quality assessments. PHL also supports a wide range of digital imaging options including MacroPath (gross) photography and Aperio digital whole slide scanning (bright field and fluorescent). The Aperio system allows for digital slide conferencing via a secure internal server and integrated image analyses options utilizing Aperio Genie Toolbox and Definiens Tissue Studio software. The laboratory also banks a variety of control reagents and tissues that are used to facilitate research. Overviews of laboratory capabilities and results from representative projects are presented. Funded by NCI Contract No HHSN261200800001E.
