Abstract

The Basic Science Program provides support to NCI CCR laboratories that carry out investigator-initiated, hypothesis-driven biomedical research. The BSP CCR Genetics Core (BCGC) was formed in response to research support needs of CCR Principal Investigators. This core is an indispensable component of multiple CCR research programs owing to several factors including, responsiveness to research needs, resident expertise and creative problem solving. The BCGC has unique characteristics that have resulted in a high degree of utility to the CCR customers. The BCGC operates using a comprehensive “from carbon to silicon” approach that encompasses the ability to organize studies/establish cohorts, collect and process samples, generate and interpret data. This integrated approach and application of established expertise adds value to the services provided due to elimination of redundancy and increased efficiency. Application of inherent expertise and a commitment to being responsive places the BCGC in a position to guide work by anticipating/heading-off issues and solving problems in real-time from within projects. SAIC and the BSP coordinate, and inter-digitate, BCGC support with other SAIC research support capabilities such as the ISP and ATP in the cases where we can leverage resident expertise to optimize BCGC support.
