Most of the genetic information
that provides the blueprint for an organism
is
contained in the chromosomes of its cells.
The maintenance, replication and
segregation of the chromosomes is controlled
in part by the mitotic cell division
cycle and checkpoints that ensure the ordered
execution of these events. During
each cell cycle, dividing cells are faced
with the daunting task of accurately
transferring the entirety of their genomes
to their progeny. Failure to orchestrate
chromosomal replication and segregation at
the appropriate time during the cell
cycle may lead to chromosomal aberrations,
aneuploidy and loss of imprinting,
which are hallmarks of developmental abnormalities
and malignancies. This
symposium will focus on events that ensure
genomic stability through regulation
of replication timing and chromosomal segregation
and on the consequences of
perturbation of these processes in human diseases. |
