Abstract

We show here that NAPQI, a metabolite of acetaminophen, inhibits the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PL-Pro). Previous reports show that PL-Pro inhibitors prevent viral spread in model organisms. We hypothesize that OTC medications containing acetaminophen taken early in infection may prevent viral spread. Further study may be warranted.
