Radiofrequency Ablation of Metastatic Pheochromocytoma

Purpose: To report preliminary safety and effectiveness of RF ablation for pheochromocytoma metastases. Materials and Methods: Seven metastases were treated in six patients (mean size 3.4 cm, range 2.2-6). Alpha and beta adrenergic and catecholamine synthesis inhibition and intra-procedural anesthesia monitoring were used. Safety was assessed by recording ablation-related complications. Complete ablation defined as non-enhancement within the ablation zone on CT. Results: With intra-procedural arterial pressure monitoring and peri-procedural adrenergic and catecholamine synthesis blockade, no serious adverse sequelae were observed. For six of seven metastases, complete ablation was achieved (mean follow up 12.3 mo.; range 2.5-28). A temporal relationship was observed between procedural maneuvers and plasma catecholamines and blood pressure. Conclusions: RF ablation may be safely performed for metastatic pheochromocytoma given careful attention to peri-procedural management.
