Salivary Proteome Wiki: A Collaborative Environment to Share and Annotate MS-based Proteomics Data

The Salivary Proteome Wiki (SPW) is an interactive database with more than 1,000 unique human saliva proteins identified by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). This saliva proteome catalog is an open community resource that assists researchers in identifying biomarkers to diagnose oral and systemic diseases. Data are semantically annotated to enable a wide range of dynamic ad-hoc querying and reporting. In addition, users can enrich the catalog by importing new experimental data or annotating existing contents using either controlled vocabularies or unstructured text. Proposed changes go through a curation process, in which the community has the opportunity to provide feedback. External data sources, such as PubMed and SwissProt, have also been integrated to augment the in-house derived data. Built-in bioinformatics tools, such as BLAST and InterProScan, allow for more in-depth analyses. Leveraging the success of Wikipedia, the system encourages the participation of the community in enhancing the salivary proteome catalog and promotes collaboration among researchers in the field.
